Tin bronze toughness characteristics

Tin bronze generally has good toughness. Its internal organization is relatively homogeneous, and it can absorb energy through a certain degree of plastic deformation when subjected to impact. For example, moderate tin content of tin bronze (such as QSn6.5 - 0.1), its metallurgical organization is α solid solution plus a small amount of δ phase, α phase has good plasticity, in the impact load can produce uniform deformation, so that the material shows good toughness.

Tin bronze toughness is also reflected in its low sensitivity to notch. In some parts with sharp edges or small holes and other stress-concentrated parts, tin bronze can withstand a certain degree of impact and not prone to brittle fracture.

Aluminum bronze toughness characteristics

Aluminum bronze toughness varies according to the alloy composition and processing state. Generally speaking, the toughness of simple binary aluminum bronze (such as QA19-4) is relatively low, because its organization may contain more hard and brittle phases (e.g., β-phase). When the β-phase content is high, these hard and brittle phases can easily become a source of cracks under impact, leading to a reduction in the toughness of the material.

However, after appropriate heat treatment and alloy composition optimization (such as the addition of nickel, manganese and other elements), the toughness of aluminum bronze can be improved. For example, some multi-complex aluminum bronze through solution treatment and aging treatment, can refine the grain, reduce the adverse effects of hard and brittle phases, so that the toughness is improved.

Comprehensive comparison

Under the same processing and testing conditions, tin bronze usually has better toughness than aluminum bronze. Especially for some structural components or parts that need to withstand impact loads, such as some small impacted mechanical joints, tin bronze may be a more suitable material choice. However, in specific applications, other factors such as strength, hardness, wear resistance and other requirements need to be taken into account to finalize the use of tin bronze or aluminum bronze.
